Empowering Private Practice Mediation
  • The professional home for private family mediators in Canada

Most family mediation associations grew up around the court system.

APFMC was built for something different: mediators who work directly with separating couples who choose, hire and pay for their own mediator.

Our members hold the AP.fm designation, and every AP.fm mediator holds a credential in divorce financial planning. No other family mediation designation asks for that.

    Find a private family mediator
  • An association built around private practice

Private family mediation is its own kind of work. Your clients come to you by choice, not by referral from a courthouse. They expect a service, not a program.

They want someone who understands their money, their kids, their timeline and their goals, and who can help them reach a full agreement without a judge.

APFMC exists to support the mediators who do this work well. We set standards for private practice, we grant the AP.fm designation, we teach the financial and transition skills private clients need, and we help the public find mediators who meet that standard.

  • Why the financial credential matters

Separation is, at its core, a financial reorganization. Support, property, pensions, tax, the family home, two new budgets. A mediator who can't work through those numbers with you is handling half the job.

That's why AP.fm requires a credential in divorce financial planning. When you work with an AP.fm mediator, you're working with someone who is trained in both the process of mediation and the financial substance of your agreement.

Other family mediation designations focus on process alone. AP.fm is the only one that requires both.

What APFMC offers members

  • The AP.fm designation. A credential that tells clients you're trained in both family mediation and divorce financial planning.

  • A listing in our public directory. Separating couples searching for a private family mediator find you, with your AP.fm designation, location and areas of focus.

  • A code of conduct and practice standards written for private practice. Clear expectations you can point clients to, and that set you apart.

  • Education in extended financial planning and transition planning. The programs that build and maintain the financial skills the AP.fm designation requires.

  • Peer groups. Regular conversations with other private practitioners about real cases, pricing, practice management and hard situations.

  • Referrals. Members refer within the network when a matter needs a different location, skill set or language.
