Find a private family mediator

Every mediator in this directory holds the AP.fm designation. That means they work in private practice, they hold a credential in divorce financial planning, and they've agreed to follow APFMC's code of conduct and practice standards.

What the AP.fm designation means for you

Most family mediators are trained in process: running meetings, managing conflict, helping two people reach agreement. An AP.fm mediator is trained in that, and in the financial side of separation. 


They can help you understand what a settlement means for your support, your property, your pension, your taxes and your budget, not just help you talk about it.


No other family mediation designation requires a financial credential. This one does.

How to search

  • Location. Search by province or city. Many members also work by video conference, so you may not need someone nearby.

  • Areas of focus. Filter for parenting plans, financial settlements, high-asset matters, business owners, older couples, unmarried partners or other situations that match yours.

  • Language. Find a mediator who works in the language you and your former partner are most comfortable in.

  • Credentials. Profiles show each member's mediation training, their financial credential and any other accreditations they hold.

What to ask before you hire

You're allowed to interview a mediator before you commit. Good questions include:

  • How many private family mediations have you completed?

  • How do you use your financial training in the process? Can you show us how different options play out over time?

  • What do you charge, and how are fees split between us?

  • How long does a typical process take, and what affects that?

  • What happens if we get stuck?

  • Will you tell us if you think mediation isn't right for our situation?

An AP.fm mediator will welcome these questions.
